Why a COOP?
Driven to be the change we want to see in the world and inspired by the great Buckminister Fuller’s musings on how to effect such change, Cinécoop Productions chose the workers’ cooperative model. We want to make great films that inspire the best in people and we want to do this using an alternative economic model built on values that contribute toward the well-being of people and the planet.
Cinécoop Productions is legally registered as a workers’ cooperative under the Québec law on cooperatives. A worker’s cooperative is a member-owned and controlled for-profit company. There are several forms of cooperatives, both for-profit and not-for-profit. You can learn more about different kinds of Coops here.
The biggest distinction between a cooperative and a regular enterprise is the limitation of non-members in the controlling majority of the Board of Directors. This means that all level of strategic and day-to-day decision-making is controlled by those with a direct stake in the activity of the Coop : its members!
